- How can I keep my child motivated?
In the summer with warmer weather and the end of school near, kids will be excited to hang out with their friends and have fun outside.
Your child may become disinterested on certain days and it might be more difficult to get them to karate class. At Soto's Martial Arts, we understand this and want you to know, this can be normal...
I have listed a few helpful tips for summer motivation:
1.) Remind your child of the summer blast events we are holding.
2.) Keep class attendance to the recommended two times per week.
3.) Keep weekly "scheduled" karate days so it isn't a surprise.
4.) Remind your child of their next goal (i.e. stripes, graduations).
5.) Encourage your child and let them know you are proud of their dedication and hard work before and after each class.
Note: If your child is not excited about attending class this summer but they are happy after afterwards...the challenge is most likely not their karate class. The challenge may be that they don't want to stop playing with friends, swimming, outdoor activities etc;. We have found out most children's commitment is with right now whether they agreed to train consistent or not.
- My child seems to be excited when leaving karate class, but not to get ready?
Think about what your child is doing before class and it may be what they consider FUN at that time. Be sure to prepare your child in the morning saying something like "Evan, you will be going to karate tonight after dinner...you are getting closer to your green belt, isnt that exciting?"
- Is there something I can do at home before class to make it easier for me?
You can try assigning your child a task or chore they need to perform before leaving for karate class. If its something you know they dislike, when you say "Lets get ready for karate class" you may be surprised how fast they stop the chore or task and waiting in the car for you.
- What can I do if my child doesnt want to attend and has a fit?
Our suggestion is to tell your child they will be going to class anyway, and if they dont want to attend anymore...they need to talk to Mr. Soto about this. We suggest you still bring your child in uniform and if things are not going well, have a seat in the viewing area with your child...and believe us...the instructor will know there is a challenge. By doing this, you will be sending a message to your child about following through, and sometimes when we dont feel like doing something, we have to do it anyway.
